I grew up eating watermelons with seeds. Period. Never knew a life without them.

My Pawpaw was a farmer, and in the peak of Summer, he morphed into the Melon Man. To watch him pull up with his truck with watermelons for sale was always a sight. The joy he put on people’s faces.

To crack open one of his melons was a spiritual experience. Healing, to be exact. And, of course, there was always enough to go around. Watermelons are community food.

My Pawpaw was the first social entrepreneur I ever knew. He is the reason TGFB means so much to me. It gives me a chance to talk to him. Like those days on the back of his truck, eating watermelon. Of course, with seeds.

“Watermelon Man, an iconic institution in Southern Black communities. In the Summer months, they are the highlights of our markets and staples on the sides of rural roadways. At its core, watermelon represented a pathway to self-sufficiency for formerly enslaved Africans. After the Civil War, free Black people grew and sold this fruit of African origin to lay a foundation as they reclaimed their lives. This practice of agricultural entrepreneurship has been passed on for generations and still lives today. Featured in the photograph above is James Earmon Harris (1914-2008) of Calhoun County, Arkansas, one of the Co-Creators of Tall Grass Food's beloved ‘Papaw’. He was a Melon Man, among many other things.”
